At night on land migrating monarchs slumber on certain trees, hung in festoons with wings folded together, thick on the trees and shaggy as bearskin. [p. 244]

About This Quote

The monarch butterfly is an insect indigenous to North America. It has a wingspan of up to five inches, which makes it one of the largest butterflies in North America. During the day, its wings are locked in a protective position over its body. But at night, the monarch takes flight and roams around in search of food or mates.

The butterflies do this using what is called “sensory-motor integration”. A series of receptors on their antennae send information to their brain about the positions and movements of their surroundings through sensory input and motor signals. This process allows them to know where they are and how to move in that particular space.
